Sapa or Hanoi as your starting point
The night you save
The default Vietnam route sends you Hanoi, Sapa, Hanoi, Ha Giang, Hanoi. Two of those legs exist only because tours are sold from the capital.
Going straight across cuts one overnight bus and one night of accommodation. On a two-week Vietnam trip that is a full day back in your pocket, and it is the day you would otherwise spend recovering in the Old Quarter.

What the transfer is like
About 260 km of road between Sapa and Ha Giang city, roughly six hours by minibus, through Lao Cai and along the Chinese border. It is a daytime road with things to look at, unlike the Hanoi sleeper run.

Which order to do them in

The exception is weather. If the forecast for the loop is clear this week and thick next week, ride first. Fog on Ma Pi Leng cannot be rescheduled; a valley walk in Sapa mostly can.
If you only have time for one
They are not the same trip. Sapa is walking: terraced valleys, homestays reached on foot, a cable car up Fansipan, real hotels and coffee shops in town. Ha Giang is riding: passes, cliff roads, homestays reached on a bike, and towns that are not built around visitors.
Pick Sapa if you want mountains without a motorbike or you are travelling with people who cannot ride. Pick Ha Giang if the road itself is the reason you came.
What you actually ride
The loop out of Ha Giang city is about 350 km whichever town you started in: Bac Sum Pass, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, the Dong Van plateau, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and the southern arc back through Du Gia. Starting in Sapa changes the getting there, not the riding.
What it does change is your state on day one. Arriving by daytime minibus after a night in a Sapa bed is a different body from arriving at 04:00 off a sleeper bus, and day one is the day you learn the bike.

The border permit
It applies regardless of where you started. Foreign passport holders need a border area entry permit for Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac, at 200,000 to 250,000 VND, about $10, paid on arrival.
Send your passport details when you book and the operator files it. Operators report tighter checks since 1 June 2026, though no official government notice confirms that date, so treat it as current practice on the road.
Where you finish
The flexible drop-off is the quiet advantage of this booking. Instead of being returned to a fixed point, you are put onto the transport that suits your next stop, which for most people means an evening bus toward Hanoi.
Say where you are going next when you book rather than on the last morning. The options are better if the operator knows in advance.

Sapa in the days before
Most people give Sapa a day and a half, which covers a valley walk down through Lao Chai and Ta Van and either the Fansipan cable car or an afternoon doing nothing in town. That is enough to see why people rate it and not so much that the loop feels like an anticlimax.
Book the loop before you book Sapa. Ha Giang departures with a capped group are the constraint; Sapa accommodation is not.
