Ha Giang Loop From Sapa: Skip the Backtrack

The night you save

The default Vietnam route sends you Hanoi, Sapa, Hanoi, Ha Giang, Hanoi. Two of those legs exist only because tours are sold from the capital.

Going straight across cuts one overnight bus and one night of accommodation. On a two-week Vietnam trip that is a full day back in your pocket, and it is the day you would otherwise spend recovering in the Old Quarter.

What the transfer is like

This trip handles the transfer as an overnight VIP sleeper. Hotel pick-up in Sapa starts at 19:00, the bus leaves at 20:00 and it reaches the operator's hostel in Ha Giang about 02:00, so you get a dorm bed for the rest of the night. Breakfast and briefing are at 08:00 and the ride starts at 09:30. Pick-up does not run at weekends.

Which order to do them in

It depends on your next stop. This trip ends in Ha Giang, with an optional sleeper bus on to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long or Cat Ba. If Hanoi or the coast comes next, Sapa first and the loop second keeps the route in one direction.

The exception is weather. If the forecast for the loop is clear this week and thick next week, ride first. Fog on Ma Pi Leng cannot be rescheduled, and a valley walk in Sapa mostly can.

If you only have time for one

They are not the same trip. Sapa is walking: terraced valleys, homestays reached on foot, a cable car up Fansipan, real hotels and coffee shops in town. Ha Giang is riding: passes, cliff roads, homestays reached on a bike, and towns that are not built around visitors.

Pick Sapa if you want mountains without a motorbike or you are travelling with people who cannot ride. Pick Ha Giang if the road itself is the reason you came.

What you actually ride

The loop out of Ha Giang city is about 350 km whichever town you started in: Bac Sum Pass, Heaven Gate, the Dong Van plateau, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and the southern arc back through Du Gia. Starting in Sapa changes the getting there, not the riding.

What it does change is your state on day one. Arriving on a sleeper bus at about 02:00 with half a night in a hostel dorm is a different body from one that started the day in a hotel bed, and day one is the day you learn the bike.

The Transfer Options Compared

LocalVietnam lists a direct day bus at about 230 km and roughly 6.5 hours, with a limousine van or standard sleeper berth at 300,000 VND (about $12) and a VIP sleeper at 350,000 VND (about $14), first departure around 07:30. Sinh Cafe also describes a two-leg route through Lao Cai, where the Sapa leg takes 1-1.5 hours at 50,000-80,000 VND and the Lao Cai to Ha Giang leg takes 6-7 hours at 250,000-350,000 VND (about $10-14). It puts the trip through Hanoi at 12-14 hours and a motorbike ride over Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi at 2-3 days.

What the Tour Transfer Means for Day One

Two Hanoi-based tours also collect from Sapa by bus: 4-Day Loop from Hanoi with Infinity at $230 and 3-Day Loop from Hanoi with Infinity at $188. Pick-up time varies by city and is confirmed by WhatsApp. Both add a hostel night in Ha Giang before the loop starts. It does not run at weekends, so pick a weekday date.

The Overlap Window

The Sensible Fay rates Sapa best from March to May and from September to November and Ha Giang best from September to November, so the shared window is September to November, with March to April as a second choice. My Favourite Escapes says the Sapa terraces are at their lushest from late May to September, and Sinh Cafe says the Hoang Su Phi terraces turn gold at harvest in September and October. The Sensible Fay advises avoiding July and August for heat, monsoon rain and landslides, and Ha Giang city records 545.3 mm of rain in July against 153.6 mm in October.

Its group met rain, fog and cold on the plateau in early November, so pack warm layers even in the good window. Ha Giang city averages a low of 17.2 °C in November and 13.3 °C in January, and the plateau is colder.

Planning the Transfer Around the Weather

Rain affects the transfer as much as the loop. vietnamtourism.com puts the Hanoi to Ha Giang sleeper at 7-8 hours, stretching to 8-9 hours in rain. If dry switchbacks matter, aim the 3-day loop from Sapa at October, when Ha Giang city gets 153.6 mm against 545.3 mm in July. The border permit

It applies regardless of where you started. Foreign passport holders need a border area entry permit for Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac. The listing says it is not included and costs $10 per person, paid on arrival. Operator blogs quote 230,000 to 300,000 VND (about $9 to $12). Ask the operator at booking whether it files the permit for you.

Where you finish

The flexible drop-off is the quiet advantage of this booking. With the drop-off option, a sleeper bus collects you in Ha Giang between 18:00 and 20:30 for Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long or Cat Ba. With the Drop-off in Ha Giang option the trip ends there and no bus ticket is included.

Say where you are going next when you book rather than on the last morning. The options are better if the operator knows in advance.

• Ask about a private room: bookings of 2, 4 or 6 get a free private room for the two loop nights
• Leave your big bag in the Ha Giang luggage storage, not on the bike

Packing for both halves

Sapa and the loop want different things from your bag. Sapa is walking in mud and Ha Giang is sitting in wind for hours. The overlap is warm layers and waterproof shoes. The listing supplies a warm coat, knee and elbow protectors, a raincoat and a small backpack.

Carry cash in small notes for drinks and tips on the riding days. Both are outside the price.

Sapa in the days before

Most people give Sapa a day and a half, which covers a valley walk down through Lao Chai and Ta Van and either the Fansipan cable car or an afternoon doing nothing in town. That is enough to see why people rate it and not so much that the loop feels like an anticlimax.

Book the loop before you book Sapa. The Sapa pick-up does not run at weekends, so fix the loop date first and fit Sapa around it.

Who it suits, and the rules

This booking is not suitable for travellers who want to end up back in Sapa, since the trip finishes on the Ha Giang side. The listing also says to expect long stretches on the bike with frequent breaks and some muscle soreness. It is not suitable for children under 6 or wheelchair users.

What to bring: warm layers that work for both a Sapa valley walk and a windy pass, waterproof shoes, a buff, sunglasses, your passport and cash in small notes. Travel insurance is not included.

Not allowed: riding without a helmet. This trip has no self-ride option, a local rider takes the bike. Your big bag stays in the Ha Giang luggage storage during the loop.

The alternative

The cheapest 3-day Hanoi departure is the Aquarius trip at $137, with the cabin sleeper bus both ways included. That is cheaper than the Sapa transfer trip. It costs you the night on the bus and the backtrack. Bus terms vary by listing: on the Infinity trips the drop-off bus is not included but can be arranged.
