What the fourth day actually buys
Lung Cu, and why three-day tours skip it
The circuit is the same 350 km whichever length you book, so the fourth day is not extra road. It is extra time on the road you were already riding.
Lung Cu Flag Tower marks the northernmost point of Vietnam, on a hill above a valley that is already China on the far side. It is a detour off the Dong Van route, and a detour is exactly what a three-day schedule cannot absorb.
So it goes. Ask three people who did the three-day version whether they saw Lung Cu and you will get three different answers, because it depends on how fast their group rode and whether the weather cooperated. On a four-day tour it is on the itinerary rather than in the maybe pile.

The waterfall, and an afternoon that is not riding
Du Gia waterfall is a fifteen-minute ride from the homestay village down a road worse than anything you covered that day, and then a pool cold enough to make the argument for itself. Three-day tours that reach Du Gia arrive with the light going. Four-day tours swim.

The border permit
Every four-day itinerary spends more time in the border districts than a three-day one, which makes the border area entry permit a certainty rather than a maybe. It costs 200,000 to 250,000 VND, about $10, paid on arrival, and your guide files it from the passport details you send at booking.
Operators have reported tighter checks since 1 June 2026. No official government notice confirms that date, so it is current practice rather than published law. Bring the passport itself, not a photograph of it.
Private rooms
Three nights of shared homestay rooms is where the four-day trip separates people. If you sleep badly in company, the private room upgrade is worth more here than on any shorter tour.
