Who Can Ride the Loop Themselves

The table below sorts the passports the listings and guides most often carry. A yes means a 1968 IDP with a motorcycle category plus your home licence lets you ride the loop legally. Where sources conflict, the table says to check before you count on it.

What Happens if You Ride Without the Right Papers

Riders report police spot checks for licence and alcohol on the loop, and Vietnam has a zero-alcohol limit for riders. Vietnam News notes that travel and medical insurance covers riders who are legal on the road, and the UK government warns that breaking the licence rules may invalidate your travel insurance. One agency guide puts a medical evacuation from Ha Giang to a Hanoi hospital at €4,000 to €8,000.

The UK Foreign Office also advises against hiring a motorbike if you are not an experienced rider.

Which Tours Let You Ride

Two bookable tours give you the choice of riding or riding pillion: the Aquarius 3-day loop and the DragonflyCruise 3-day loop. The Chestnut self-drive tour is self-ride only, and its listing states no licence rule, so bring the 1968 IDP anyway. Every other tour on this site is easy rider or open-air jeep. Reading the Table

The 3-day small group with Aquarius is the cheapest day on the site at $45.67. The 4-day trips cost about the same per day as the 3-day ones: $57.50 for the Infinity 4-day and $62.50 for the Hong Hao 4-day against $62.67 for the Infinity 3-day. The open-air jeep and the 5-day Cao Bang trip cost about twice as much per day.

Included on Most Listings

The Hong Hao listings name the bike: a 110cc Honda Blade semi-automatic, with fuel, helmet and protections. Meals, beds, entrance tickets and an English-speaking guide appear on every motorbike listing, and the Nho Que River boat is included on several. Travel insurance is listed as included on the Hong Hao and Infinity tours only.

Paid on Top

The border permit is the main extra. It costs $10 per person on the listings that state an amount, including the Aquarius 3-day, the DragonflyCruise 3-day, the Chestnut tours and the Sapa departure. Operator blogs put the fee at 230,000 to 300,000 VND (about $9-12) and say it is cheaper if you file it yourself at the immigration police, while permits arranged through a homestay or operator can carry a service fee of 30,000 to 100,000 VND (about $1-4).

No official fee schedule is published, so confirm with your operator. Also budget for drinks, tips for the guide and riders, and any private room upgrade.

What Two, Three and Four Days Change

On most listings the 3-day loop sleeps in Dong Van on night one and Du Gia on night two. The 2-day tour keeps Dong Van but skips Du Gia. The 4-day tour adds Lung Cu, caves such as Lung Khuy, or a night in Nam Dam.

The 5-day trip to Ban Gioc Waterfall continues out of Ha Giang into Cao Bang province and ends there.

How Far You Ride Each Day

Riders put a typical day on the bike at 4 to 5 hours at 30 to 40 km/h (bucketlist2life), and one agency guide counts 6 to 8 hours a day with stops as a passenger. The listings that print distances give day legs of 95 km to 150 km on a 3-day loop. That pace leaves time at each pass and still reaches the night village before dark.

On a Tour

Almost every Hanoi departure includes the sleeper bus. The Aquarius 3-day loop uses a cabin VIP sleeper at 11:00 (reaching Ha Giang about 18:00) or at 20:00 (about 01:00), or a 16:00 limousine seat (about 23:00). The DragonflyCruise limousine leaves Hanoi at 20:00-20:30 and checks you into a homestay around 04:00 for a nap before a 07:30 breakfast.

From Sapa, the TripBestie bus picks up from 19:00 and rolls at 20:00, arriving about 02:00. Because arrivals land in the small hours, operators give you a dorm bed or hostel corner until breakfast, so you sleep a few hours before the ride starts between 08:30 and 09:30. Your main luggage stays in storage at the Ha Giang hostel or homestay while you ride with a daypack.

Booking the Bus Yourself

If you start in Ha Giang city or plan to ride it yourself, buy your own ticket. Buses leave mostly from My Dinh bus station, and some pick up in the Old Quarter. Overnight departures run from about 21:00 to 22:30, with a few day buses at 07:00 and 14:00.

From Sapa and Onward

Travellers coming down from the northwest can join the Sapa departure, a 3-day loop with an easy rider that includes the overnight bus from Sapa and a hostel bed on arrival. Prices for every format, from the 2-day short loop to the 5-day ride, are laid out on the price page.

The Open-Air Jeep

The open-air jeep from Ha Giang Jeep Adventures costs $398 per person for 3 days and 2 nights, starting and ending in Ha Giang city. A professional driver handles the jeep, so you never touch a motorbike, and you sleep in traditional houses with a private room both nights. Pick-up at your Ha Giang hotel is around 7:30-7:45 am, the route covers Bac Sum Pass, the Hmong King's Palace, Ma Pi Leng Pass and Du Gia waterfall, and rain ponchos and a jeep cover come included.

It suits travellers who want the views without the road risk. For comparison, Ha Giang Motor Ventures lists a 3-day, 2-night jeep loop for 3,750,000 VND (about $145) with a maximum of 4 passengers per jeep, and a 4-day jeep at 4,850,000 VND (about $188).

The 5-Day Loop to Ban Gioc Waterfall

The 5-day loop to Ban Gioc Waterfall with Lila Inn & Motorbike Tours costs $595 per person and runs 5 days and 4 nights from Ha Giang city to Cao Bang city, always with an easy rider. You sleep in dorm beds in homestays in Yen Minh, Dong Van, Bao Lac and near the falls, and a private room costs a 500,000 VND (about $19) surcharge per person. The listing is for adults aged 18 to 45.

The reward is Ban Gioc itself, a waterfall of about 30 m on the Quay Son River on the China border, reached through Khau Coc Cha Pass and Khuoi Ky Stone Village, with a boat ride and Nguom Ngao Cave on the last day. No return transfer to Ha Giang or Hanoi is included, so plan your onward travel from Cao Bang.

The Road

QL4C, the Happiness Road, is a narrow mountain highway with switchbacks and loose gravel in places. Rockslide season runs from May to September, and local reporting after prolonged rain has described dozens of landslide points along the route. Trucks use the road, and riders report construction traffic with loose rock, dust and mud on the Dong Van stretch.

Fog is at its worst from November to February, especially on the karst plateau. Ride in daylight, keep your speed low, and let the guide set the pace.

Beginners and Easy Riders

A first-time rider should book an easy rider, where a local drives the bike and you sit behind. This is the standard option on most listings, and several operators offer it exclusively. The gear that comes with the bike is usually a helmet, protective knee and elbow guards, a raincoat and on some listings a warm coat and seat cushion.

Travel Insurance

Standard travel policies often exclude motorbike riding, so check four things before you go: that the policy covers motorcycles, the licence condition (riding without the right licence can invalidate cover), the engine size limit, and how it treats a pillion passenger on an easy rider's bike. Riding intoxicated voids cover. The Hong Hao and Infinity listings say travel insurance is included, but read what it covers before you rely on it instead of your own medical and evacuation policy.

Month by Month

The dry months run from October to April. October sees a mean maximum of 28.9°C and 153.6 mm of rain, falling to 84.1 mm in November, and March and April are dry and warming, with March rain at 64.6 mm. The wettest months are June to August, when rainfall peaks at 545.3 mm in July and temperatures pass 32°C, with landslide risk at its highest.

From December to February it is dry but cold: December nights average 14.0°C in the city, January drops to 13.3°C, and nights are colder up on the plateau. Fog is worst from November to February and can hide the viewpoints entirely. For dry roads and clear days, October, November, March and April are the pick.

What to Pack

Storage space on a bike is small, so bring a daypack and leave the big bag behind in Ha Giang.

• Layers, because January nights in Ha Giang city average 13.3°C and the plateau runs colder.
• A rain jacket, since showers come fast even in the dry months and every listing issues only a basic raincoat.
• Closed shoes with grip, because sandals slip on pegs and wet stones.
• A buff or scarf, which blocks dust on road-work stretches and cold wind on the passes.
• Sunglasses, for glare, dust and low sun on the switchbacks.
• Cash in small notes, because homestays, coffee stops and the border permit are paid in cash and change can be short.
• A daypack for water, the camera and an extra layer, with your main luggage left in storage.
• Any medication you need, packed in the daypack you carry on the bike.
